Consulting Invoice Template

A consulting invoice bills advisory work — often a workshop, a written recommendation, or a named phase — rather than a physical product. The document is still a standard invoice: who you are, who pays, a unique number, dates, line items, and the total due. InvoiceBizz does not create a separate “consulting document type.” This page loads a phase-based example in the same generator.

Who this consulting invoice template is for

Independent consultants, small advisory firms, and contractors who bill a sprint or a package. If you sell retainers, split the month into named lines (for example “October advisory retainer”) instead of one unexplained lump. For mixed freelance design work, start from the freelance invoice template.

Fields a consulting invoice usually needs

  • Your practice name and how to pay you
  • The client’s legal billing name and, if they issued one, the purchase order number
  • Unique invoice number, invoice date, due date
  • Named phases or deliverables — workshop, memo, review — not “consulting services”
  • Total due in the billing currency

Optional customizations

  • A deposit already paid can be a negative line or a note; InvoiceBizz does not have a separate deposit document type. If you record a deposit as a line, say so in the description.
  • Tax label and percent when you must charge tax. Confirm that with your own adviser; this page is not tax advice.
  • Classic or Bold Navy layouts if you want a more formal header than Minimal.

How to use this template

  1. Open the sample with the button above.
  2. Replace Northline Advisory and Brightfield Retail with real names.
  3. Keep one line per phase you actually delivered. Delete unused lines.
  4. Set the due date to match the signed proposal, then write that calendar date on the invoice.
  5. Download the PDF and send it. InvoiceBizz does not collect the fee.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Omitting the PO when the client’s process requires it — many finance teams cannot pay without it
  • Changing Net 30 on the PDF when the proposal said Net 15
  • Bundling three phases into one line so nobody can see what they are paying for

Payment considerations

Consulting work is often Net 30 because that matches corporate calendars. If you need cash sooner, agree Due on receipt or Net 15 in the proposal, not after the work is done. Read payment terms and Net 15 vs Net 30 vs Net 60.

FAQ

Is this a different invoice type in the generator?

No. It is the same invoice form with consulting-style line items and the Classic layout. Notes can mention a statement of work. The PDF is still an invoice, not a contract.

Can I use this for a monthly retainer?

Yes. One line such as “November advisory retainer — up to 8 hours” is clearer than an empty “retainer” line. Add extra hours on their own line.
